Probably named after it’s decorative perforations (referred to as ‘Broguing’) on the surface of the shoes, Brogues are one of the classiest pair of shoes that every man must own. A type of dress shoe traditionally meant to be worn for a formal event, brogues have now gained popularity for their smart-casual appeal. There are different types of brogues – derby brogues, oxford brogues and monk brogues.

 2. Loafers

One of the most timeless shoes when it comes to style and appeal, loafers are the lace-less pair of shoes that you can slip on and still look smartly dressed. They can be worn practically anywhere and with anything – formal clothes, casual attire or even for a stroll by the beach. There are three common types of loafers. One of them being penny loafers which got its name from the tradition of placing pennies in the Weejun diamond cutout which served as funds to make emergency phone calls by the Ivy League college students who wore this style of shoe back in the 1950s. The other two types are bit loafers and tassel loafers.

 3. Oxfords

Oxfords are the finest, most royal footwear a man can wear. The shoes having originated from Scotland and Ireland, gained popularity when rebel students at Oxford University wore them instead of knee-length and ankle-length boots. Ideally Oxfords are your best pick for formal wear, black and brown being the most opted colours. They come in variations like cap-toe, buck, wingtip and multiple other shoes inspired by Oxford origins.

 4. Moccasins

Similar to the slip-on functionality of the loafers, moccasins are made of leather and stitched with a soft sole. They originated during the days when Native Americans wandered in the wilderness. They generally have tassel, bead and hand-drawn embellishments to make them the most eccentric and lavish pair of shoes you’ll ever own.

5. Sneakers

Sneakers spell out sporty and casual like no other pair of shoes. If you’re a sneakerhead, you’d know that you can’t have one too many sneakers. There’s the classic white that goes with anything you wear, then the quirky retro sneakers that make your T-shirt and jeans look cool and many more.  Modern day sneakers can never match up to the vintage kicks like New Balance and Chuck Taylors but these timeless shoes are what every man needs at every stage of life.

6. Derbies

Derbies are considered to be less formal than Oxfords but they still fall under the category of dress shoes or formal shoes. A type of brogue as mentioned earlier, the Derby brogue lacks the traditional perforation on its upper side as the original brogues have. Derbies have an open lace with eyelet tabs sewn onto the top of the uppers. These shoes can be worn with formal suits and blazers as well as paired with a more casual outfit. Apart from the open lacing, Derby shoes can also have the W shape of wingtips and Brogueing.
